What landscape lighting is for
Where roofline lighting works on the building, landscape lighting takes care of the yard: the walk, the beds, the trees, the steps. Done well, you notice the yard and not the fixtures. Done badly, you get a line of glowing dots along the path and not much else.
The pieces of a plan
Most plans start with the walk, because that is the part you use whether or not anybody is looking. A well placed uplight gives the yard depth after sunset. Beds, stairs, walls and the drive fill in the rest, and some of that is safety more than style.
Landscape, patio and security lighting overlap
The request is rarely just one type of lighting. Out back, patio lighting is the difference

Where landscape lighting goes wrong
More light is not better. Even light across the whole yard kills the contrast that makes it look good. The second mistake is glare, so every guest gets a light in the eye on the way to the door. The third is ignoring how the yard will look in five years, when the shrub in front of the uplight has doubled.
Businesses and communities
Businesses light the grounds for other reasons. A restaurant patio needs light people want to sit under. A parking area is about people getting to their cars. A neighborhood entrance is about the first impression of the whole community, which is why entry lighting gets attention in planned developments.
Combining the two
The two solve different problems, and most properties want both. The house reads as a shape; the ground has layers. Either one alone leaves half the property flat.Doing them in one plan is easier than doing them a year apart. If the budget has to be split, ask which half does more for your property, and the answer is not always the house.Landscape lighting is not entirely hands off. Mowers, mulch and time all move things slightly. An annual adjustment keeps it looking the way it was designed.
Where to go from here
A landscape lighting installation should be designed at the property, at night if you can.
