Curb appeal is usually judged at two in the afternoon
The front of a home absorbs a lot of budget. All of it assumes the sun is up. Then the sun goes down and the whole thing disappears. For a solid stretch of the year, the evening view is the one most people get.Put together, none of this is exotic. The uncommon part is thinking about it before the sun goes down, not the budget. The houses that stand out after dark got that way on purpose.
The elements that carry at a distance
At road distance the fine work does not register. What carries is silhouette and contrast. That means the roofline, the entry and one or two features do almost all the work. A lit roof edge gives the house a shape. A lit entry gives it a focal point. An accent or two stops it reading as a facade.
Not the holiday one
The purchase conversation is usually about holidays. The actual use is mostly ordinary evenings. A soft white wash along the roofline is not a decoration. It is architecture, lit. That is the setting responsible for the curb appeal argument, and it is the one people forget to ask about.
Consistency is what makes it look expensive
The fastest way to make a front elevation look thrown together is lights of different whites. Two different whites on one elevation catch the eye for the wrong reason, even when nobody can say why it looks off. Consistency beats quantity, and it is free if you plan it up front.
The commercial version
A commercial property gets the same fast read from passing traffic. A well lit facade reads as a going concern. An unlit one says very little.
Beyond the front elevation
Almost every plan is written for the front elevation only. Very few people see a house square from the front. They see it at an angle as they drive past. An outline ending mid building is noticeable. Carrying the line around the corner even a short distance fixes it, and it belongs in the plan from the start.
The front door is worth more than any other single fixture
The single highest value target is the front door, by a wide margin. A lit entry gives the elevation a focal

It is also the one piece of lighting that does obvious practical work, since that is where anybody arriving has to go.
